PAGEANT OF THE STATES

This makes a good first impression with its excellent color work, clear pictorial maps, and careful selection of figures and facts for a quick survey. But the text, describing each state in a page opposite the map, seems too adult for its purpose. There is little dramatic or pictorial sense, virtually no story effort, and the subjects selected as background material on the states, tie in very loosely with the maps, and demand a fairly good factual background for real value. The book is approved by the N. Y. World's Fair committee, and has a foreword by Grover Whalen. But frankly, though this insures a big sale, particularly locally (in New York), the book itself seems to me less interesting for the average child than the Hader Picture Book of States (Harper) or the one published by Little, Brown.
