The odd circumstances which take place in the household of old Mrs. Lavant provide a more provocative case than usual for Desmond Merrion when Mrs. Lavant, reported dead, is later seen alive, and the body of a much younger woman is found in a boathouse. With Mrs. Lavant's disappearance, and that of her servants, Merrion is eventually able to establish the imposture which she sanctioned and which led to murder... An unexpected activity here, but the pace is still precise.
