KIRKUS REVIEW

Part of the popular ""First Look!' series, which encourages children to observe one characteristic at a time in distinguishing between similar animals or plants. In this title, the child focuses on birds of prey, including owls, hawks, ospreys, falcons, vultures, and eagles. Here are day and night hunters, owls with varied face shapes, eagles with dark and light heads, hawks with pointed and rounded wings. A surprising amount of information is conveyed in the brief text and the carefully detailed black-and-white charcoal illustrations. While the average reader may have little opportunity to observe and distinguish between eagles and hawks in flight, many children will enjoy this look at popular birds of prey seen in museums and zoos.
