Sure to confound kids and teach them the effectiveness of natural camouflage are these now-you-don't-see them, now-you-do photos of insects and animals indistinguishable from their surroundings. In some cases the camouflage serves as lifetime protection, in others they lose it when they no longer need it (the fawn's spots--full-grown he can outdistance his enemies), in still others it changes with the season (the snowshoe rabbit, seen in a remarkable sequence). The origin and persistence of these adaptations is touched upon lightly, without mentioning the word ""evolution,"" but you get the idea. Revised from 1947 publication and as it stands, a true search for knowledge.
