Girl holes up in foggy manse/ Handsome owner looks askance/ Wife was killed upon the stairs/ Where there's a ghost who also scares/ Girl is nearly bumped by rotter/ for prying where she hadn't oughter/ Villain returns to complete crime/ Hero comes in nick of time. Here the girl is a historical novelist, the manse is English and due for 20th-century renovation, the ghost and the treasure are from the time of King John, and there's the usual frigid housekeeper, the unfriendly friend and one sinister other. Oh and yes, there's a dog. The novel's one too.
