Public libraries or school libraries with inadequate funds for Botkin and Clough representation will not feel cheated with this superb collection, whose fundamental basis is the household tale and whose reference value is unlimited. From 19 areas 200 tales have been brought together, varying from short shorts to 10,000 word length. Legends, myths, fables, the best in modern retelling (by Constance Rourke, Zora Neale Hurston, Frank Dobie , Babette Deutsch, etc.); original sources of classics like Rip Van Winkle, William Tell, etc.; readability the major criterion of inclusion. Authoritative source, refelction of national character, antiquity, popularity are additional factors. The romance of chivalry is deliberately omitted. Comprehensive and very worthwhile.
