THE DIZZY DEAN STORY

Dizzy Dean, the Ozark born, hickory stick schooled youngster who became a record-setting, pennant winning pitcher for the Cardinals in the '30's had a whizting fast ball (not a screwball as his sobriquet might imply); he was also a clubhouse clown, and the practical jokes of his Gas House Gang fed the legend. On the bverse side, he had a big mouth and was sufficiently irritating to be farmed out for a time; he also was anxious to make money out of the game. Today- he's still a familiar figure around home plate- broadcasting, and Shapiro has provided another competent (no more) commemorative in a series of baseball biographies which has included many performers.
