This career book for teen-agers, written by a member of the New York Herald Tribune reporting staff, treats, in fictional form, a young man's first year on a New York paper. It traces David White's first faltering steps as a bud reporter, his first byline, his almost fatal mistake, and his gradual emergence, at twenty-two, into professional maturity. The plot, into which a wholesome love story is lightly woven, is comprised of various episodes, many of which are recognizably based on true news items, and which are not only in themselves intrinsically interesting, but point out to the teen-age reader, those subtle but basic attitudes which distinguish the vague enthusiasm for a glamorous career from a truly professional approach to journalism.
