KIRKUS REVIEW

Despite certain fictionalization, this is a predominatly reportorial biography of Maryland's fighting Catholic, Charles Carroll. A man of supreme integrity and erudition, for the years prior to the Revolution, Carroll was unable to implement his fine judgment because of the prohibitions imposed on all non-Protestants. But like so many Americans, the war of 1776 provided him with a framework in which to grow, and for the rest of his long life, Charles Carroll lived a life of distinguished service. A compassionate tribute to one of the original signers of the Declaration of Independence, an outstanding Catholic, a fearless patriot.
