Two remarkable collections of photographs. The editor's reliable eye (Portugal, p. 947) has balanced his evident ardor for his subjects--there is little that's sentimental here, much that's adopt. Horses includes portraits of colts, trotters, statues and action shots of racers, work horses, round-ups, circus performers. Lovers displays the usual young couples (including African tribesmen, Chinese peasants with bicycle, and a couple straddling a baby carriage) in heart-warming fashion but includes able shots of oldsters, swans, and few ""socially significant"" portraits (the interracial couple, for example). The texts consist of poetry--from Shakespeare to Faulkner. Photo techniques vary enormously. Two handsome books, imported from Germany, which appear here in the Terra Magica series.
