WHO KNOWS WHEN WINTER GOES?

Who knows? Anybody who tries to work his way through this controlled vocabulary blether about the weather will find it difficult to tell. The general idea, told in thirty pages of impressionistic verse, is that wild animals are sensitive to the most minute indications of an approaching season. The beginning, word by word reader will find it almost impossible to follow the sense of these twisting, almost pointless sentences. For instance--""A deer will know/by thin green grass/ on brown wet ground/ under melting snow, /by the sound/ of a stream/ as it runs/ in the sun,/ soon-soon/ winter is gone."" And that soon/gone rhyme is just one example of the instances where the attempt to use simple words will just result in confounding the audience. Harold Simon's large animal water colors are handsome, although some of them tend to have an enlarged text book look.
