KIRKUS REVIEW

Mum would have to be lying about her 39 years, for US audiences at least, to have seen her own Mum dressed in the wild Flower Power garb, elaborately teased wigs, and high, high platform shoes that Goss depicts in this riotously colored import. Explaining to her preteen children that she had to make her own fun, as there were no computer games or CD players, that pre-McDonald’s fast food was fish and chips or Chinese, and that her school was closed when men walked on the Moon, Mum recalls bygone days. Goss evokes them with domestic scenes featuring piles of mod accessories, dazzlingly patterned clothes, period commercial products, and psychedelic swirls of color. Most parents of equivalently aged children won’t hark back to that era—but this still should leave them feelin’ groovy, and perhaps willing to reminisce. (Picture book. 6-8)
