One of the less familiar Andersen fairy tales, this lends itself enchantingly to Harold Berson's illustrations in line and three color wash. There's a story quality to the drawings- humor- and a sense of the Chinese background which considerably enhances the value of a tale of the nightingale that sang first to the kitchen maid, then to the emperor. Here's a fable with more behind it than simply the story line.
