The little French village where Ann and Paul lived in neighboring chateaux was topped by a tall church steeple inhabited by hundreds of cawing black crows. When the steele was destroyed during a lightning storm, one of the homeless birds deigned to come and live in the children's magnificent home-made bird cage; and Grococo's antics become the despair and delight of their lives.
