KIRKUS REVIEW

The origins of this Jewish holiday in terms a four-year-old can comprehend: the Maccabees' three-year war against Antiochus's persecution, the Jews' victory, and the rededication of the temple are briefly limned in a text that is ready for further explication but is lucid as it stands, Detail is also kept to a minimum in the watercolor and ink illustrations, attractive in their simplicity and muted colors. A welcome, useful addition to the holiday shelf.
