WILL I HAVE A FRIEND?

Brownstones outside the window, an integrated nursery school--""Will I have a friend?"" asks Jim. ""I think you will"" says Pa. Jim is on the edge of things most of the first day, but at last someone speaks to him and they play together. All the normal activities of a quiet day at school are glimpsed in this tentative little story, reiterated with less skill (and cyclamen Negro faces) in the wash drawings. The details of toys and classroom and the cartoon-like figures of the children are fun to look at--a soft-sell initiation for newcomers, instant empathy for veterans.
