YOURS WITH LOVE, KATE

By

Publisher: Houghton, Mifflin

Kate Douglas Wiggin, beloved story teller and creator of Rebecca, is the ""Kate"" of this title, an addition to Houghton's junior biographies, and a good one. A warm and loving tribute this, in a rounded biography- more story than literary tribute. One steps right into the family when Kate was seven and her mother married a second time, and the tale of years in a small Maine town, of country school and Boston boarding school, make good adventure. Then Kate grows up, meets a young Dartmouth law student named Sam Wiggin, moves with her family to California, and divides her enthusiasms between kindergarten work in the Adler-cum-Froebel tradition -- and a start in writing, encouraged by Mark Severance. She married Sam, also California-bound, and set up her own kindergarten in San Francisco. Then came his death and ultimately her second marriage to an international sportsman, well traveled, rich in literary background. Throughout Kate's own sunny philosophy bubbles through her story.
