Miriam Schlein's first book for this older reading group does not stand out with the merit of her stories for younger readers. It is a thoughtful, well informed narrative of an Eskimo boy's coming to manhood, but aside from that has little to raise it from the level of fair story material. Good descriptions of Eskimo ways and feelings emerge from the follow through on young Oomi's activities for a summer and a winter- hunting salmon to preserve for cold months, a fight with a loon, family relationships, the extreme importance of the seal hunt. Finally as Oomi builds his own sled, he is given the longed for recognition from his elders and when winter comes, kills his first seal.
