MOON MONTHS AND SUN DAYS

An undemanding, pedestrian introduction to the calendar, beginning with a review of what makes a day, a month, and a year, and ending with a look at the more arbitrary division into days of the week, concentrating in between on the development of the Western calendar by the Egyptians, Romans, and Pope Gregory XIII, and broadening the perspective a bit with brief summaries of the Greek, Hebrew, Sumerian and Mayan calendars. It's all reasonably informative at this level and consistently easy to follow, but as Schlein offers no new insight nor stimulating approach, and as Shelly Sacks' would-be humorous pictures provide no visual aid to understanding, libraries already owning the titles by Brindze (1949), Navarra (1967) and the Adlers (1967) may feel that they have the subject adequately covered.
