The complexities of what makes an uncle an uncle, a mother a mother, an aunt an aunt are of primary interest to every child in his first investigation of society. Whimsically treated here, the family, its structure and meaning, are scrutinized. That mother once was a little girl, that she, too, had a mother, who miraculously is also a grandmother, that aunts are nice and perform myriad functions, that cousins are aunt's children and mother's nephews sharing grandparents but not parents, all these facts form a pattern both puzzling and delightful to the little boy of this story. As he unravels the puzzle he unearths the most delightful ingredients of the ""family""--warmth, love and closeness.
