SMALL RABBIT

Recalling another fledgling's first venture forth in the same pair's Swim, Little Duck (1976), this is the less engaging story of Little Rabbit who goes out to play armed with warnings against Hawk, Fox, and Human. Misapplying her parents' descriptions of the enemies, she runs instead from a butterfly, a mouse, and a squirrel--but ends up with a new rabbit friend whom she brings home for supper. A frail plot, which Miles' telling does nothing to strengthen. And Arnosky's small, thin pictures--page after page of dun-colored rabbits--are simply monotonous.
