SWIM, LITTLE DUCK

Miska Miles at her engaging simplest, with a little duck who goes off to see a bit of the world. She is joined by a young pig who shows her the pigpen he considers the best place of all (""interesting,"" says Little Duck), a rabbit who takes her to the meadow home he thinks is better (""Nice,"" says little Duck), and a frog from her own pond who inadvertently leads her home--where she is happiest. Miska Miles' prose flows along with an easy natural rhythm, and from the opening sentence--"" 'Swim, Little Duck,' a big duck said, 'but don't go far away'""--she strikes just the right balance between curiosity and home comfort. And though Amosky's Little Duck is just a bit cute, his lovingly framed, black line and brown wash pictures are suitably gentle, and just a touch amused by those other creatures Little Duck encounters in her travels.
