A magic story with enough realism and enough adventure to appeal to the most hard-boiled of youngsters..A boy is sitting on the back steps of a mid-west farmhouse, on a June day in 1878. He was doing what lots of boys do- wishing for something exciting to happen. Then down the road came Uncle Dick, Aunt Louise and retinue of Chinese servants and things began to happen fast. Most wonderful of all were the 600 year old magic fire-crackers. Each night, when Uncle Dick set them off for Greg and his chum, amazing figures of old China would be freed, and grant a wish to one of the boys. They were odd wishes and they came true in odd ways to make an unusual, original and entertaining story, often very funny, and with just enough magic to make it mysteriously exciting.
