All toddlers’ most fascinating subject (themselves) receives an earnest portrayal as a young child celebrates himself and his world. As he names his body parts each by each, the tyke gives thanks for their useful function: “When I sit down, I sit on my good bottom. / Thank goodness!” The focus then turns externally to the youngster’s loving parents, his busy town and the larger universe. Rendered with red crayon outlines, simple figures convey a childlike immediacy within the direct narration. Bold collages emphasize warm tones on textured paper-bag backgrounds, and strategic page turns provide a natural climax. In the most dynamic sequence, the crowded, colorful neighborhood turns to the outlined image of the child’s face superimposed on the starry night sky. “I hear a ticking clock. / And in between the noises I hear … / SILENCE.” An author’s note takes readers through Bang’s bookmaking process and gives them tips on how to make their own celebrations of self. Joyous. (Picture book. 2-5)
