A PROMISE IS A PROMISE

Publisher: Houghton Mifflin

Twelve-year-old Ruthy Morgan discovers something of the meaning of being a Jew in the year which encompasses her brother's Bar Mitzvah and her own Bas Mitzvah some five months later. The year of growing up presents other facets, from an uncomfortable experience decorating a Christmas tree at a friend's Sunday School party, to attempts to aid an ailing neighbor in caring for his cats. Gradually, she comes to feel that being different is not synonymous with being undesirable and that this applies to others as well as to herself. A good objective not wholly satisfactory in development.
