MISHMASH AND THE SUBSTITUTE TEACHER

The large black dog is back again (Mishmash, 1962, p.424, J-120) with all his -dog traits-- like lounging in a bathtub with all fours skyward. The likable teacher, Miss Patch, has been temporarily relieved of duty by a brittle, thin-lipped woman who believes in texts. Pete and Wanda spend after school hours digging a ake-shift shelter after they hear that the end of the world is near. The world is still around when test time arrives; all ends peacefully as Pete passes the test. Events which are meant to be comical come off flatly in a book which offers little for the reader's consumption.
