After 12 years of living in Japan, the author serves for 5 months as war correspondent in Shanghai and Hankow, and then travels east towards the U.S. via Indo-China, Siam, Malaya, Java, Bali, India, etc. She contrasts the various civilizations she encounters, investigates some of the controversial problems of natural resources, and talks with everyone. Good reading and full of interesting material. Her angle on the Chinese-Japanese war is primarily anti-Japanese. She discusses Gandhi's power and the personalities around him. She gives colorful sketches of the places and people with whom she comes in contact.
