The story of Dell Thornton, a public success as a soap opera writer whose private affairs were by no means 99 4/10 pure, this tells of a woman who fooled almost everyone- and herself- with her formula dramas of marital fidelity, maternal renunciation, but ruined the lives around her. Indiana farm born, and inheriting a Methodist conscience and a set of store values. Dell soon learned to rationalize any principles she violated. Marrying a weakling, Gerald Thornton, and in love with another man- Peter Madison- whose son she was carrying, Dell needled her husband into suicide, considered it loyal to her husband's name to maintain the fiction that the child was his. Through a lifetime of fraudulent tactics, false gestures of nobility, and possessive overconcentration on her boy, Dell finally loses Peter and her son, whose perversion she has accomplished... Some familiar, feminine ingredients here, this goes at quite a clip, puts a possible personality through some rather impossible paces, and includes some sex scenes which are more than a little rumpled. For rental library (not public) circulation.
