Striking full-color photographs and a lively text make this a choice browsing title for those interested in science, insect pests--and the revolting. Drawings and photos of external and internal parts of cockroaches, an identification key for common roaches, information on the life cycle, and experiments are included. The tone is occasionally cute: ""Cockroaches vomit a portion of the food that they eat and they also liberally deposit their feces. Both leave a sickening smell. So, several hours later, if you were to eat the food that had been left out [if cockroaches has touched it], guess what you'd be eating!"" The book suggests housing cockroaches for experiments in an open aquarium with only a barrier of vaseline applied to the upper edge to keep them inside--possibly risky. One experiment suggests pitting cockroaches against each other to observe and score aggressive behavior. Names and addresses of commercial cockroach-suppliers are listed for readers who lack a local supply. Glossary, index.
