ONE PAIR OF HANDS

Charles Dickens' great-granddaughter, determined to work, tells of her experiences as cook-general in English homes. Badly equipped for the jobs she encounters, but with an eye for the comic, in her employers and herself, she gives a brisk account of her career and the resulting picture of the English servant problem, backstairs doings, is most entertaining. Hometruths, not necessarily English, emerge. Good reading.
