TOPSY TURVY: The World of Upside Down by Monika Beisner

TOPSY TURVY: The World of Upside Down

Twenty-two bits of verse suggest such humorous inversions as a girl sitting on a doll's lap, sheep exchanging places with fleecy clouds, and mice nibbling at a cat; Beisnet's jewel-like, surreal paintings of the scenes float dreamlike on ample white pages in this well-designed book. But the reversals are only mildly amusing and not particularly thought-provoking--perhaps their humor has not survived translation from the German--and Beisner's illustrations, for all their elegant precision, are static.
