KIRKUS REVIEW

A vigorous boy and dog story, with a somewhat new slant, in which too much happens to be typical, but the telling adds conviction. At 16 Don Buckley is given his own dog to work and train, but the puppy Rusty barks, unforgivable in a cattle dog, and he must train him in silence. It's a hard month on the open range of a western mountain ranch, with work and perils providing testing for both boy and dog. A tightly woven story of wilderness battle and man's faith in the animals he trains.
