An officer's diary begins with the day when he is ordered down, to the lowest level below the crust of the earth, from which he will launch the atomic war to come and be protected from its devastation. His vacuum-packed existence leads to severe depressions and he finds the confinement claustrophobic. Finally action is ordered and the pushbutton release of two thousand rockets ends the war in less than three hours. But the final annihilation is yet to come.... Essentially science-fiction, this is an impersonal project which rephrases a familiar forecast in a rather toneless fiction.
