WAR PROPAGANDA AND THE UNITED STATES

A remarkably objective, factual discussion of war on the home front via propaganda based on the research done by the Institute of Propaganda Analysis. Today, when selling a war and the allied case is extremely difficult, particularly since the first world war taught the U.S. that it had been duped by empty slogans, we are hostile to illusion. Nonetheless, the propaganda organizations, though faced by a more onerous, and a more subtle task, are now at work. This is an analysis of how they work, -- English, French, German, via radio and screen, lecture platform and literature. What ""Germany hopes"" and ""England expects"" from the American citizen, who to date, despite extreme shift of policy of the leading American forces, group and individual, remains anti-war. Who are the strong pro-Ally leaders, from President Roosevelt to Dorothy Thompson, to the Herald Tribune's editorial policy, to the leading liberal and conservative leaders of big business, big politics, big intellectual names. Then who are the outstanding isolationists, obstructionists. The answer is that 95% are still against America's active participation, up to May 1st. The latest Gallup poll indicates a miraculous shift in the past month. But whatever the immediate situation, this has tremendous value as a full, clear cut and forceful account of the spoken and written word at work in America.
