Another in the dependable ""portable library"" series, but one which- for a Conrad fan- will prove disappointing in its omissions, that may however serve to lead a good many who are not familiar with Conrad to further reading. An excellent introduction places Conrad in that strategic moment in English writing when what he had to bring to it helped to revive and give new life to a flagging stream. Conrad's own story is intimately interwoven with his work, and the editor shows the influence of successive, crises, the torments of his temperament, as his work dramatizes the hostility of forces in his own being, the shifts from a life of danger to the confinement of melancholy inaction. This volume will hold attraction for students of his craftsmanship. The collection includes some of his shorter pieces, a few of his best known works,- Youth, Typhoon, The Nigger of the Narcissus, specifically.
