THE BIBLE IN THE HANDS OF ITS CREATORS

An opportunity to examine the one (then) copy on the Pacific coast reveals the following facts. Moses Quibbory is a Hebrew scholar, living in Palestine, who has devoted his life to retranslating the Old Testament from original sources, and - through this process -- has arrived at quite different interpretations from those of the King James version, the Modern Readers' Bible, and in fact any one or all of the other translations in popular use. Boake Carter became interested some nine years ago, and helped finance the process, and formed a company, using the title under which this book is published, to issue and publicine and sell the first volume, which is now available. This first volume is not a translation, chapter by chapter, book by book, but a kind of Concordance, with verses brought together under headings, to build up a rounded interpretation. It is intended to be read consecutively, as - for example - Science and Health is read, to get the development of the successive themes. According to the long and wordy and -- to me -- obscure, introductions, the conclusions at the end of this reading will remake one's whole philosophy of life and help one determine whether the scriptures (Old Testament is meant) are most closely approximated and lived by those following the tenets of Judasm, Christianity or Islam. The style of the translator's own writing seems to be a cross between The Book of Mormon and Science and Health; intelligible, in all probability to those who study it closely and sympathetically, but involved to the general reader. I may be wrong in my guess, but I feel that sales will depend wholly on the impetus given by Boake Carter, and that the book itself will prove a disappointment to those who expect to find it a ticket to a philosophy that fits today's needs.
