A second case for tenacious, introspective Lennox Kemp (The Sitting Ducks), divorced, disbarred English lawyer now working for McCready's Detective Agency. His new client is Jessica Moss, whose heretofore blameless architect husband Malcolm has run off with a beautiful blonde. Jessica wants him traced but within a week he's voluntarily back in the fold. Meanwhile, Kemp's sleuthing has produced some unanswered questions--why did Malcolm Moss sell a lucrative part of his business, and what were he and Leopold Pearson loading into the trunk of his car one dark night? Moss had designed a house for Pearson and his neurotic young sister Lucille. When Lucille's body surfaces in a nearby pond some months later, it's judged a suicide, but the death of the Pearson's young maid in a bike accident pushes Kemp to find answers. A trail of emeralds and the actions of arrogant police surgeon Benjamin Seft add further complications. Research into the past and a sharp, sensitive intellect eventually pull all the threads together. All in all, an absorbing, complex and stylishly written story, marred only by a slightly overworked coincidence factor. One looks forward to the author's future work.
