KIRKUS REVIEW

Good local and Catholic sale, and a plus sale for the California travel market. A living history of the twenty-one missions in California, their founding, and the hardships the early fathers endured, their march to power, their disintegration and finally their restoration. The period on which she concentrates is from 1769 to 1823, and she has tapped contemporary records for information about their construction, the life of the fathers, what they were, what they ate, the first conversions and baptisms, troubles with the Indians, schools, and the legends and romances associated with their history. A good job.
