THE COSSACKS

Hindus has a facility in blending history and story and andote and setting his narrative against a background that gives you a feeling of seeing, hearing and feeling the places and people of which he writes. Here he takes one segment of the USSR, the uban Territorial Soviet, stronghold of the Cossacks, and gives his readers a sense of the dramatic, adventurous and picturesque history of the Cossacks from their earliest Republic in the Ukraine, to their recent contribution to Russia's victory. He includes legend and hero myth and bits of biography, as well as his own personal experiences, his interviews with key people in todays amazing program of rehabilitation. Nature is prodigal in the uban -- man has made a great human contribution- and one gets a sense of a magnetic, virile people, an integral part of the Soviet.
