DIXIE RAIDER

The year-long saga of the C.S.S. Shenandoah, second only to the Alabama, which was a menace to Union merchantmen during the last year of the Civil War, was hunted as a pirate ship when it unknowingly continued its raids after the war's end. From journals, personal accounts, here is the ship's history from its illegal purchase in England, its arming at sea, its many successful chases. And on another level, the life aboard her, feuds and friendships, relations with prisoners, storms and a Pacific typhoon, etc. etc. Under Captain Waddell the Confederate ship captured 38 Union vessels, sailed every sea except the Antarctic, took close to 1000 prisoners, finally surrendered in an English port. History, which has many elements of excitement and adventure, this is not however the Shenandoah's first launching in print.
