FREE RIVER: A Story of Old New Orleans

A rather complicated but exciting story, the central theme being the mystery of Guita's birth. As the locale is New Orleans at the time of her great changes in ownership from Spain, to the France of Napoleon, to the United States of Jefferson, the history is involved but interesting and includes such colorful rogues as Aaron Burr, General Wilkinson and Lafitte. The author weaves in voodooism, slave uprisings and the fear of yellow fever and adds to them a Boston straight-lace, French plantation friends, Spanish duenas and a strange slave nurse. The period is fascinating and the book comes very close to being good.
