BECKONING STAR

By

Publisher: Dutton

Maybe children were more sophisticated in New Orleans in the early 1800's, but this story of a spoiled 16-year-old boy who gets involved with gambling and a duel and is ""saved"" by his 14-year-old sister is hard to believe. Slaves are patronized in good old Southern style, and the whole book might be called class conscious. The story improves as details of the early colonization of Texas by American settlers fill the pages, and young readers will no doubt enjoy it in spite of its defects.
