KIRKUS REVIEW

A proletarian novel -- the setting a Western mining town (neighborhood of Butte, I think) -- the method of handling, somewhat in the Manhattan Transfer tradition, cross sectioning the town and its people. In more sober vein than his earlier books -- and conveying a sense of social import. More mature, both in substance and in handling.
