Mabel Luhan to the life, camouflaged sufficiently to escape the charge of libel, but recognizable, not only in personality and characteristics, but in the unrolling of her tale of avid conquest, -- marriage after marriage, punctuated with affairs and culminating in New Mexico, where lightning strikes and ends her amorous career. This is the Florence of the story -- and paralleling her tale is that of withdrawn and tragic Dora, who loved the first man and the last man in Florence's erratic passage, only to loss them both to her sensational and exotic rival. Brinig is less pornographic than in some of his early work; less homely than in some of his recent work; and inbly amateurish in his overwriting and slapdash style.
