Here are the messages exchanged between the Pope and the President from 1939 to 1944. Formally worded, those underline their parallel endeavors for peace and the alleviation of human suffering, give reassurances of good will, exchange greetings at Easter, at Christmas, and at the close of the Allied offensive in Italy, reassure the Pope of the Vatican City's inviolability.... There is nothing of interpretation nor comment, except superficially in a preface by Truman and an introduction by Myron Taylor, Roosevelt's personal representative at the Vatican. There seems little of general interest in so bald a presentation. Its value is largely reference.
