KIRKUS REVIEW

A lighthearted expansion of a familiar folk song: ""The farm's all in order,/There's not much to do./Take care of the farm. We'll be back by two!"" As the parents depart, the mayhem begins: ""Flies in the sugarbowl, Shoo fly, shoo. Cats in the buttermilk, Two by two. . .Pigs in the parlor. . .Hulla-baloo!"" Indeed, there are active animals in profusion all over the house--to the consternation and delight of the two children left in charge. They finally get everybody organized into a circle game and even manage a clean-up before their parents return. Westcott cleverly echoes the original song while mixing her comical new version; even funnier are her lively pen-and-watercolor illustrations, with dozens of delicious details (including cows cooking and sheep doffing their wool to splash in the bathtub). Music included.
