Gemma’s thoughts flow with lyricism from beginning to end. Scene one: Gemma crouching in a chicken coop, clutching her favorite chicken and singing loudly to drown out the relatives who’ve arrived to yank her away from her beloved foster home. She’s been on the farm for eight years, since she was found alone in a squalid rooming house at age four. Now her twin brother and the aunt and uncle who raised him bring Gemma to their upscale house, a place as foreign to her as her brother. Reading about saints, she decides that earning an angel is her only hope for saving her foster family and their farm. Toward this end, she steals money and a jacket for a homeless woman, sells her new family’s antique lead soldiers and tries to be good and courageous. All the while, scaly, mysterious Red Boy haunts her dreams. Magical thinking both helps and hinders Gemma, who must finally confront her past—and her future. A unique voice, and fresh, beautifully written story. (Fiction. 9-12)
