A Labrador Retriever's view of the world that is just putting on the dog. Tarr to Mr. Smith, Cerberus to Monkton Smith, Sweetie to Mrs. Smith, and Blackie to the rest of the world, he considers himself the best of everything until the Hooper dog moves in next door. Jealous and self-pitying, he lets himself be lured into the back seat of some stranger's car and then suffers for his rashness. Dognapped, he is sold to a hunts-man but takes off at the first shot only to end up with dogcatchers: ""If only he had been dog enough to take a bit of discipline he would not be in the pound now."" But the Smiths see his picture in the newspaper and claim him. Not only does he get roast beef and gravy but his disappearance also knocks his dreamy master back into reality. This would be more convincing if Tarr were spared the sermonizing and the burden of curing human problems.
