A play to read rather than to see, by the author of Journey's End. He enlists all one's sympathy for the deposed emperor, exiled to St. Helona and housed in one time cowsheds. With pitiful pretense he strives to sustain the pomp and ceremony of court life, organize his dreary days with meticulous care, attempts to produce a garden, and strives to hide the encroachment of disease from his captors. Simply done, but the spirit of former grandeur is deftly created and hope sustained for eventual return to France and the throne.
