That ""something for Laurie"" was a poodle -- Bon Bon by name -- acquired by Laurie on a trip to Kentlworth Kennels where a friend bought a thoroughbred for a small fortune. Defective because of his coloring, the little poodle was about to be ""put to sleep"" when Laurie Intervenes. Knowledge of the animal's origin would blemish the reputation of the exclusive kennel, so Laurie promises never to reveal this in exchange for the poodle's life and ownership. Cynical and unhappy until now, Laurie's life suddenly takes on meaning. Through Bon Bon (and an improved attitude), she makes new friends, finds a romantic interest In Don, an aspiring vet and even improves her marks at school. Suspense mounts when Bon Bon is stolen, resolved only after Don sees it returned to its rightful and grateful owner. The poodle acts as a springboard in Laurie's life; it is the girl not the animal who comes across to her readers. That ""something for Laurie"" might have been anything to start her moving toward life.
